Dire Straits

And the influence was my mate when I was about 14 cos he could play the guitar and was learning to play like Mark Knopfler.

But later on when I was about 26-27 I worked with a guy and we went back to his house for a brew when he got his "leccy" guitar out and played "Sultans Of Swing" brilliantly. That's what made me eventually buy my guitar and try to play it, too!

Scouse.
P.S. now I'm having lessons and I just hope my finger holds up.

Oasis and The Beatles. My guitar teacher said Oasis were a God send because loads of people were coming to him wanting to learn Oasis tunes. Been playing ever since they came out (Oasis that is. I wasn't around when the Beatles were together)

I liked Jean Michel Jarre from a very young age, and pink floyd, but i think my 1st major obsession with a particular band was oasis, it was oasis that made me pick up a guitar at 15,

got into oasis loads and through them learnt of the stone roses and the smiths, through the stone roses i learnt of Led Zeppelin as John Squire was obsessed with Jimmy Page and the roses 2nd album was pretty much a led zeppelin rip-off.

My dad then said why dont you learn some propa rock and roll and blues rather than just oasis and the stone roses etc, he gave me Zeppelin I and Zeppelin II to listen to and straight away i was like.. Yep this is for me! And been my fave band of all time since.

Through them ive got into the blues so much, i love it, Bo-Diddly, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bukka White.

Then the White Stripes came along who are massively blues influenced and one of my all time fave bands and through Jack White i learned of the "fathers of blues" Robert Johnson, Charlie Patten.

Amazing how you just go further and futher back.

I suppose my sister introduced me to punk, I used to borrow (without her knowing) her records and then really got into listening to the late great John Peel, he used to play the hardcore punk that none of my punk mates would listen to, too fast and aggresive they would say, that made me feel like I had a taste and collection unique to myself.
I listen to most things but nothing from the past 20 years has influenced me as it hasn't really been very innovative.
I've tried to listen to music that has been non-mainstream or chart orientated, there's a hell of a lot more choice that way.
