i do like a nice cover, also some of my pop trivia for songs that people dont realise is a cover :D
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (originally by Bob Dylan)
I Fought the Law - The Clash (The Crickets)
I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - The White Stripes,,,, originally Dusty Springfield
One - Johnny Cash,... U2 oroginally.
Wonderwall - Ryan Adams. as big as the original Oasis tune was, this cover is sublime
lucy in the sky with diamonds - william shatner (beatles obviously, but its so funny it wins hands down, the video is genius :D)

God i was horrified when i 1st heard this, the origanal would be over by the time he does the 1st verse lol.
Hard to cover a smiths song tho and make it work these days, has that thatcher'esque sound the smiths that just doesnt work in todays society

Behind Blue Eyes... originally by the Who.. but was covered by Limp Bisket (i think or may have been Greenday) for the Film Gothika ... and when i heard it .. i just said thats the B****ox ..
Its very rare i like covers, and a few just shouldnt be covered, No1 on that list is Nillsons ' Without You' ... ruined by many
One other Song thats hard to cover is the Pretenders I'll stand by you .... and yet i caught a singer on Pop Idol/X-Factor or one of the others that did it justice.. but so many have killed that song .
Here you go Gary, one of the best songs ever written, and yes a bloody good cover...

But cheers :thumb:
I think the whole issue with covers is what version you heard first. Anything you hear after will always be trying to better what you knew first.
Anyway I am going to get the piss ripped out of me for this (and desevedly so :D ) but I prefer Barry Whites version of Billy Joels "Just the way you are" because I heard it first and was brought up on it:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zNWNYxNJV6wYouTube - Barry White - Just the way you are.
and by the original:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KtMAvjvw-LcYouTube - billy joel-just the way you are.
:bolt:
Jon,
I can't believe you think that cover is better than The Who version................not in a million years! :noway:
Although, I do agree with what Kieron said as I think "Born To Run", originally by "The Boss" isn't as good as the version by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It's a lot better the in the faster version.
The Boss's version......

I like pretty much any cover done by Me First and the Gimme Gimme's (Made up from NOFX, Lagwagon, and others).
Punk covers of everthing from show tunes to country, to current pop.

Ive just realised my fave song of all time is a cover too.. Led Zeppelin, In My Time Of Dying. Its actually an old slave worker song from early 1900s, and 1st recorded then Blind Willie Johnson as "Jesus make up my dying bed" Obviously didnt have the kick ass power as Zeppelin tho!
check this out, and 3:20 onwards is musical orgasms for me!!!
