    Sorning a car question.

I bought a car for my son last week just before going away on holiday and its been locked in my workshop. Just got back yesterday. It needs a bit of work before going back on the road and I will have it on the road by 1st May. Obviously we will be taxing and insuring it from that date. Currently it is still showing as 'taxed' on the database as we have yet to send the V5 off (doing that tomorrow). The previous owner has now un-insured it. My question is, What are we supposed to do? As it will be off the road until May, can I/should I sorn it? If so, how do you go about doing that if you are not the registered keeper? Someone on here must have come across this situation recently. Thanks in advance.

You can sorn it using the doc reference on the green slip, if you don't sorn it you can be fined for no tax or insurance.

I love it when there's two definitive answers!
    Any more?

If I sorn it now using the doc reference and then send the V5 off, how can I tax it at the beginning of May if the V5 hasn't come back by then? Can I still use the reference of the green slip? Oh, forgot to say, the previous owner left the main part of the V5 with me to post off!

You can still use the doc ref on the green part, it has to be sorned if it's uninsured so is worth doing even for a week or so.

Just tried that. The computer says 'NO'! Apparently it says I cant use the green (new keeper) part because its not in my sons name yet.

    Re: Sorning a car question.

Sod it. Just did it using the main part and clicked the box as the original owner! I should be able to tax it online on May 1st using the green part reference number even if the V5 hasn't arrived by then shouldn't I, or will it be best to go to the post office, hand the green part in and do it over the counter? I'm so out of touch these days, I feel positively prehistoric!

you can still use the green slip in the post office, done that fairly recently as the dvla website is confusing as shit and was quicker for me to drive to the post office lol

one reason might be so they can make an estimated £50 million a year extra out of us from the part months tax we lose when buying or selling a vehicle.

    Re: Sorning a car question.

I think I've got it sussed now. A newly purchased car can be taxed online, over the phone or at a post office using the new keepers supplement. If doing it online or over the phone, you do not need to have an insurance check, you only need an MOT. If doing it at the post office, you need to show your insurance certificate as well as your MOT. Only difference from years gone by is that the tax starts on the first day of the month in which you tax it and you cannot choose when it starts, i.e. If you tax it on the last day of the month, you'll lose a whole month as it will be backdated to the first day of that month. My son is going to tax it at 00:01 on the 1st of May.

    Re: Sorning a car question.

Kids eh? He changed his insurance over this morning and passed his old car on to a needy friend for £100 just to cover his first 6 months tax. I've had the car sorned and stored in my garage in East London and just got back from taking him up there, cup of tea until the clock struck 12, taxed it online and he was off in it. Like a dog with two dicks at the moment. He's only 28!!!
