    Soft Cosworth?

Is it possible, should you wish, to convert a Cossie motor to run as an ......................automatic?

If someone was up for the scene but wanted the smoothness of an auto, someone who was impaired and wanted to run one or just to be different.

I know there were thousands of auto pinto's made through the years. I also know that Ford made their Cossie Granada with an auto only spec from the factory - that was coping with 195 bhp as standard which is not too far from the standard YB bhp figures.

I quite like the idea of the power and the drivability of such an incarnation. I know many will say 'put the Cossie V6 in it' or 'just run a V8' etc.

What would you use? C3 from the 80's, C4 from the 70's or something totally different?

This thread is here because I thought about it - no other reason. My car is for the track and so I am not turning . All the top fuelers are auto......say no more.

An interesting thread or a bomb

    What say you......................

There is an Anglia with a cosworth turbo and an auto that is used as an everyday. I've seen it about at some shows and track days and I think it was in classic ford. No idea what the spec is though but I'm sure someone will know who it is.

Thats mint Rich Its different and I quite like it - they dont all have to be racers and if ya into thr YB and want a docile road car - nowt better.

    Re: Soft Cosworth?

I meant it as a its possible as you werent too sure in the original post. Personally i dont know, i have never driven an auto for any length of time, but a quick blast round the block and it felt odd....kinda like a go cart For a motorway cruiser i guess it could be quite a nice conversion....but for me it would spoil the car somewhat, but thats only because i like gears Leave the auto boxes for the hot bmw's
Obviously if you only had one leg on the other hand, then it would be an ideal way to own a cossie

    Re: Soft Cosworth?

my daily driver for around 6 yrs now is an auto. around town i think its quite enjoyable and if u get a newer 1 that can be shifted by paddles it can even be used in anger

times have changed, machines took over as far as shifting times go....its a fact.

oh yeah to answer the original question...lol....i would put an audi rs6 V8 lump in as this is all you will ever need and auto plus sequential (to some degree)

    Re: Soft Cosworth?

Ford made a Cosworth Sierra Estate Automatic, Sir John Whitmore had one, when I first met him and didn't have a clue who he was, I had my Black 3 Door and he was telling me how nice my car was and that he had the Estate version, I knew Ford hadn't made one but didn't say anything as he was a customer. A few months later he had explained that Ford had asked him to test drive it and he liked it so they gave it to him ! He then told me he had a lotus Cortina and a Cobra too...............

    Re: Soft Cosworth?

granny cossie auto is on the limit with the 24v and is usually the first or second mechanical part to die on them, plus the later BOB ones are ECU controlled so would need some jiggery pokery to get working right.

i'd use an american autobox from something beefy, might be tad heavy but simple and strong, also you would need to match the stall speed of the torque converter really well to make sure it wasnt trying to engage the drive fully before the engine was on boost.

    Re: Soft Cosworth?

Over here we have the Ford Falcon xr6 Turbo, or the extra hot version the FPV F6 Typhoon.
Think of a Saff cossie on steroids and you get the picture.

They are around 370BHP standard, a straight 6, 24v turbo, many are tuned much higher, (I re-mapped one to around 600 flywheel BHP once)

Many of these have a 6 speed auto box, which is becoming more and more popular,
they drive really well on it, and still fly when you give em some stick
there are definitely good autos out there that would suit a cossie
