Good for the Goose is good for the Gander?

People with partners on turbosport are automatically exempt from this post ... I just wondered how many of us actually have an equal relationship when it comes to our hobbies/expenses?

My better half loves to spend "our" money on clothes and holidays.. however I'd get a roasting if I did the same with the car.. which i can live with, as i benefit from holidays too, and they're generally excellent, even though it'd be cheaper if I was doing the holidays we'd not have been to half the really cool places we have cos we'd be in spain or the canaries every year so I guess I can't complain there and generally speaking I think i get a reasonable deal. We made an agreement when i sold my old S1 that whatever car I got next (providing we had something reasonable (read gutless and new) to drive) about in my car was my business and my business alone.. I said from the start she won't like it and probably will never go in it let alone drive it which she still seems fine with, despite the time and money I've invested in it, but I just wondered if there's anyone who blatantly gets away with more (or perhaps more imporantly less!) than they should do with regard to their car?

i've had no problems on that front ... but then again i'm single again

my ex was actually very reasonable when it came to spending money on the car, so long as everything else was covered

perhaps you should do what a friend does - puts cash away during the week, sponges of his wife at the weekend, orders parts and has them delivered to my house

mind you, when i got 2 speeding tickets within a month, she allowed herself to spend the equivalent fine money on clothes

I've most definitely spent more on my car (including purchase) in the last 3 years than my missus has on herself and herself only (this is kids and shared activities aside) and to quote "don't tell the missus how much it really costs" probably applies... Although she will have a fair idea as she's seen Burton catalogue and isn't daft...R.

Please don't get me wrong folks.. I['m not complaining.. but I think ESF summed it up quite well... "don't tell the missus how much it really costs"

I was just interrested in how the rest of you lot thought about it!!

    Mark,

I think when you say "don't tell the missus..................", is because you feel guilty about how much it cost and that you are spending your money (both) on someting as a "luxury".
If say you spent £500 on a washing machine, the guilt wouldn't be there. I've just spent £150 on my things for my carp fishing, but I went to the shop on my own, so she didn't see how much things cost! , but even so she wouldn't say anything. I think it's self concious and when you are single there isn't a partner around to say that spending money on something of a luxury is a "No no".

Just my opinion. (or is that the way I feel about things...........mmm, feel like a psychologist!)

Lol funny one that. When I was single pretty much every penny i had went into me scort. Now im shacked up i spend my money on coupely things which is great. But i got a bit of cash for me birthday and decided im starting an escy savings account (AKA moving out fund, shhh ). But i havent spent a penny on me scort for months and my golf gets bought what it needs ie new tyres etc.
Me and me bird have our own money though and spend it on what we want, she buys clothes i buy other crap so its al good . Slowly making her appreciate old skool

    ...

My Mrs is an absolute blinder..I work all the hours god sends (overtime night and day).....I have 2 kids ..Getting married in 2 weeks,Sarah also works full time
And i spend as much money on cars as i want..As long as all the bills are paid indoors..and the kids and Sarah, can have most things they want and need its not a problem
I dont Gamble...I dont smoke.....I dont spend most evenings or weekend down the pub...Spending money on flusies....im not a druggie....So she knows where i am and what im up to...
But if i have spent more than i expected to she dont need to no...But we have paid for our wedding in Florida,And have recently move into our new house..So im doing somethink right..From the day we meet i have raced and messed about with cars..It not just a hobby...Its a way of life for me

Re: Good for the Goose is good for the Gander?

    Mark,

Wasn't trying to be nasty , Mate.
I understand what you was on about, it's just that I have 3 kids (live with mother) and I would give my kids my last penny rather than spend it on myself or the car/ fishing. But when I do get round to spending summit on myself I feel guilty as hell............maybe it was the way I was brought up. I too work and bloody hard. I'm at work for 5am and don't get home sometimes 'till 5pm. But it pays the bills and holidays, so don't complain.
I too have an understanding missus, I go fishing overnight and as soon as I get home I get a kiss and "how many did you catch"? (ususally non ).
Wouldn't swap her for the World! I suppose when you do have a hobby that is quite expensive it's good to have a partner who understands.

    Scouse.
