    Type 9 crunch

I've got a super mint type 9 in my escort low miles etc.

Since I've been running the xe (168 bhp) it's started to crunch when shifting at high revs 6k plus is this the result of the extra power killing the box or more likely to just be worn synchros?

It's still feels nice and tight and changes really nice just with the crunch when revving

I suppose I may soon have to upgrade my box if it cant handle it?

    Re: Type 9 crunch

Is it one particular gearchange that's crunching, like 1st --> 2nd, or all of them?

If it's just one gear it's probably the syncros.

Seems to be worse from 2nd/3rd but will do it in all gears if driving really hard

100% not clutch is gearbox related.

    Re: Type 9 crunch

standard type 9 box not really made for changing at 6k, they will do it ok for a while in good condition, remember these came out of family sierras and capris, not made for 180hp 6k changes, the synchros are quite soft compared to race gearboxes aswell.

even though the selector mechanism feels nice and tight the box might well have done 80-100,000 miles already

Think it must just be the grief I'm giving it.
The box came from a 1owner 30,000 mile car so is genuine low miles.

Looks like my shopping list is growing .im don't know much about type 9 upgrade options

Would a straight cut be better? Dog box? No idea of the differences in each

    Re: Type 9 crunch

    Yo,

Production type 9 is (according to Burtons)good for 175hp MAX if you want it to last.
And they don't like high revs -the change is slow (as your now experiencing when hooning along), push the change and you "beat the synchro" wearing it out rapidly.

Knowing this I used a Quaiffe SCCR H/D type 9 when I built mine.
Good job I did, I ended up with 207bhp/180lb/ft at the rear wheels and 8000rpm in every gear.
Cars done 4000 miles - no issues at all

Got the box - all new and freshly built, from off T/S.

    Re: Type 9 crunch

i dunno, i still would have said clutch not disengaging correctly. 168bhp and 6000rpm isn't the limit these boxes can take. especially a 30,000mile box. you sure the clutch is adjusted alright? you sure your kicking the clutch right down to the floor before changing gear?

It's defo adjusted correctly but I may well be being lazy with the push!! Think i will pop out for a blast and see what happens . I may well not be pushing hard enough when I'm concentrating on the road ahead

    Re: Type 9 crunch

i often find i'm doing exactly that!

go for a blast but really stamp on the clutch when changing gear in anger, and i mean stamp on it! and see if it still does it.
