    Rear suspension question

Im going to run quite a simple rear suspension setup on the mk1 but would like to ask a couple questions before i go out and buy the parts. My mk1 will have round rear turrents and im going to fit tramp bars, its a '68 mk1. Do i go for straight or angled tramp bars?
someone told me that if you fit the angled ones thay can also keep the axle from moovin side to side? is this correct?
Im not going to be fitting a panard rod kit,as iv heasrd stories about ripping the boot floor and dont like how they look.
Will the tramp bars alone be ok for a fast road car?
    thanks in advance,
    auld

    Re: Rear suspension question

I'm pretty sure the angled ones are for early mk1's as the early cars had more angled rear shocks than the later more upright ones-which uses the straight tramp bars as they clear the shocks-cant see any difference in how they both work though with regards angled being better??

Also i cant see how a panhards gonna rip the boot floor apart-unless its being flung around a forrest on a regular basis-i take it you'll still be running leafsprings to help locate the axle?

    Re: Rear suspension question

It's the other way around - later cars required the angled tramp bars to miss the shocks, early ones were straight. None of which matters if you're turreting the rear axle, you can use either
tramp bars do not locate the rear axle from side to side, they can only limit spring wind-up (tramping) on acceleration - that's what they're designed for.

You can certainly run a fast road car without a panhard rod, but the axle will move around under the car during cornering, which is unpleasant and unnerving.

My car has a Panhard rod fitted and I've used it on the road pretty hard for two years now and the boot floor hasn't torn out yet!
If this is something you are deeply worried about, the easy answer is to weld a piece of tube between the chassis rails near the panhard rod tower, this will greatly strengthen this area.
