    Math Question

Just while the subjects up on the board,

My girlfriend told me this the other day and i cant work it out at all (I have cum to the conclusion it cannot be solved) but it really baffles me how an answer can not be established

Can any of u chaps have a stab

    ...

3 fellas walk into a motel needing a room for the night as their car has just broke down

The room is £30 a night, so each of the 3 gents coffs up a tenner

once they are settled into their room, the hotel manager realises the mistake he has made an says to the bus boy

(bugger, we are having a special tonight, the room charge is only £25, will u please take them the refunded £5 up)

As the bus boy makes his way to the room he is puzzled to work out how he should split the £5 between the three gents, so helps himself to £2, making it a fair £1 each to the 3 of them ...

That means that if all 3 men recieved a Pound back, they only Paid £9 each for the room

    3 x £9 = £27

    and the bus boy took £2 ( £29 )

WHO'S GOT THE OTHER POUND ????

    i cant work it out

    Re: Math Question

the guys should of got 1/3 of £5 between them. which is £1.67 ish.
but the lad takes £2 out of the £5 so therefore there is only £3 left between them.

10-1.67= 8.33 cos the lad took £2 (3x0.67=£2ish) they actually paid 8.33 each for the room. (+got £1 back)

    8.33x 3 =£25ish + £3 they got back = 28 + £2 the lad took = £30

hopefully that makes sense it dont exist =]

should of said that they actually paid 8.33
lad takes his cut 0.67 of each. outa the 1.67 they got back each. so they get their £1 n he gets his £2

takes it up to £9 each therefore it dont exist.

Ignore the my last post lol. I mucked it up lol. i added the wrong bit. Its late.

    so they pay a tenner , get a quid back, 10 - 1 = 8.33

    Re: Math Question

    25/3 = 8.33
    5/3 = 1.67
    2/3 =0.67

lad takes 0.67 off each guy's 1.67 leaves em with 1

so instead of payin 8.33 each (10-1.67=8.33) wat it should of been (8.33x3= 25)

    they pay 9 each (9x3= 27)

    this is hard to explain

    Re: Math Question

    Actually the answer is...................

As the 3 guys leave in the morning the manager asks if they got their £5 back from the busboy, for the special room offer.

Realising that the busboy had had away with their £2, the 3 blokes go looking for him. Find him around the back of the hotel having a sneaky fag (paid for with their £2).

Confront him and then decide to kick the s**t out of him.

    Scouse.

    Re: Math Question

I first saw this a few years ago, and it bugged the shit out of of me for ages. It does make sense though, its all in the wording. Once you get your head round the numbers its actually pretty straight forward. They pay £9 each - so £27 in total, but the bus boy takes £2 of the £27 and the remaining £25 goes to the hotel... Think about it like this and you shall sleep better tonight!

    Re: Math Question

the clever bit is leading you to look for the fig £30 ie 27 PLUS 2 = 30 (not)
there is no 30 its 25
    27 MINUS 2 = 25
its hard to force your brain to ignore the red herring

    i cant work it out
We did this in teacher training last night couldn't rember it then.
theres actualy more than one equation to work out.

    3x10= 30 minus the 5 for the offer = 25

    5- 2 (busboys tip) =3

    3/3 = 1 Remaining money shared.

    heard another for you though

draw 9 boxes to represent horse stables.

Now can you put 10 horses in to the 9 stables?
