Cutting a long story short there is a Black MK2 RS2000 parked up without tax, its been on the same road for over a year without tax since then. The car sometimes moves down the road then back again months on end.
Is there anything I can do if this car is dumped to take ownership of it??
I have the Reg if anyone can get me the address for me to knock on there door and ask them if they will sell it.

I would start by contacting the local council, who will in turn contact the Police.
They will slap an order on it and contact the last registered owner. If he does not move it (if its on a public road) or claims its not his -then register your interest with the Police.

Apply for the log book? Or leave a note on the windscreen or ask arouund where the car is parked.

If you apply for the log book, the DVLA write to the last registerd owner notifying them that you have done so. If the owner fails to respond, you get the logbook and become the registered owner. A friend of mine did this very recently and is now the owner of a 3.0 Capri.
Like pit stop says if you apply for it they will write to the owner and if he/she dosent respond to it it then belongs to you

erm i think you lot are mistaken, if you take a look at a log book, its NOT a deed of ownership, its the registered KEEPER (NOT owner) If it went to court, you actually need a proper bill of sale and corroberating evidence to back up your claim of ownership. Sorry. You cant just go nick it, maybe the geezer loves it but he's ill in hospital, or maybe he's working away, or traveling, dont take much to get a brother or a mate to move it up and down the road for you, think how you'd feel if some bastard took your car away. Sorry to be a kill joy, but try it the legal way, a freindly copper might not tell you the owner, but he may look into it for you, if you ask nicly, and offer a donation the police charity if he can find you out some info about it. Course, if i was skint and some bloke took my car away and i saw it was being restored, id wait till it was finished before i went an claimed it back!!

havent the police brought in laws that if a car is parked on a public highway for a certain length of time without tax, it will be taken away and eventually crushed if the registered keeper does not respond to the summons etc?
if you phone the bobbies and say its got no tax, this may end up being its demise.
i think its best to ask around the surrounding houses first, and leave a note on it or in it.
theres probably a reason its not in use, and not taxed i.e. it likely needs £1000s of welding done to get a MOT which is why its not taxed.
take it, park it in your garden, the owner will soon be round.

Put the note in a plastic envelope...so if it pisses down, it doesn't become a pulpy, illegible mess on the windscreen.
ok guys, my conclusion is that im going to the old bill tomorrow and see what they say.
The cars been outof Tax for 2 years now, i might take a couple of pics first and take my cam with me.
Ill also leave a note on the screen in one of them see through sleeves we all used at college

I know what your saying Carl but its been out of tax for two years, surely you know what happens when you leave a car on the road without tax, especially for that long. Im gonna go to the old bill and ask what I can do without giving them the reg unless they say they can give me his details.

Saw a couple of old bill waliking the streets today, he said no matter how nicely I ask they canttell me who owns the car due to data protection act bla bla bla.

little update, the car ran out of tax 04/03 to my suprise.
Someone may be able to get me the address tomorrow if not ill be knocking on all the doors in the area
