Looks like JP made it in 08?
Interesting trap doors and baffle - what was it like when it was working - did it combat oil surge effectively?

the design is an andy rouse touring car copy so it works 100% perfect its just a shame its not made of the correct material and the pins that hold it in place were not up to the job !!!

Im not keen on them as a guy on passionford lost an engine to one falling apart and i dont want to go through this again!! It's getting re worked by tony at turbosystems to be indestructible and will be removed and checked after every trackday to be safe!

the $64,000 question is, ok the baffle broke up but how the hell did that pin end up in the oil pump?

from personal experience i say say that welded baffles are ok, but are prone to cracking with time, brazing will give a bigger surface area and is less likely to crack, if it were me i'd tack weld baffles then braze them, with the nuts that were acting as pivots being as far away from the end of the door as these, there was plenty of room for some braze, the pin probably broke due to a combination of leverage and the weld making it brittle

in my eyes dry sumping is the way to go, yeah its expensive and complicated but im sure the dry sump is the reason my engine has held together despite various problems

still have no idea how that pin worked its way up the pick up pipe, or even just the little meshy stuff on the end of the pick up to prevent foreign objects getting sucked up. weird that.

that's a story in itself! 3 (out of 4) gates broke in the same place and so 3 small bits of rod/pin from the gates were floating around in the sump, it must have been broken for a while as they have engraved marks into the bottom of the sump from where they have been vibrating around, I presume from the harmonic vibrations in the engine? The one in the pump has over time worn it's way through the gauze on the oil strainer and been sucked straight into the pump, jammed that, broke the oil pump drive and the rest is history!

Thinking about it, maybe the gates broke off when the engine first was in the 3dr as it had solid engine mounts straight to the chassis, so all the vibration would be felt by the gates I would imagine. Also where they are tack welded as you say is probably too inboard, but then again if it was welded further out then the piece that broke off would be even smaller and still capable of the same damage! Dougs sumps have the gate rolled over the pin which is then welded at the very end, so if the same happened to one of them the pin would break at the weld and stay whole and so wouldn't have been able to get up the pickup pipe.

Tony will sort it out I'm sure as he was involved in the touring car engines back in the day and they all ran wet sumps. Dans just been unlucky unfortunately, but rather now than on the trackday this Friday!!
