Can anybody point me in the right direction of what to look for on a 1988 xr2 ??

anywhere that should normally be steel will rust on a Fiesta.
mechanics I'd look at the top end of the engine depending on when it was last used and how often, may be a bit tappy, boxes are pretty good. otherwise it's the usual wear and tear.

rust is the biggest issue
