    mk2 Sprint Car Build

Well, thought I'd better give you guys a few updates to get your opinions on the rather SLOW progress! Got the rollcage finished now, pretty pleased with the door bars aswell, they give loads more room in the car which is good.
Sorry about the quality of the pics:

Dash is all gone now aswell, ready for the carbon one, relocated the steering position aswell, as I've never liked the original place:

also made a start on the strut brace which is gona tie into the rollcage, I'm prety pleased with it actually, just starting to come together:

This is how it sits at the moment, arches have got to go on but got the new panels mocked up and it's starting to look a bit meaner now:

Let me know of your thoughts on the progress, also what sort of things will the car be eligable for if I fit a 2.0 st170 engine?

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

The work you have done on youre car is fantasticBUT before you go any further i would read the MSA Blue book very carefully because for sprinting the rules are very tight. If you put a zetec in it you will be put in the dumping ground(well you would down here but rules are different elsewhere).also rules on cages and tunnels is another big one.so go carefully but excellent work all the same

Cheers for the feedback tom, could you shed any light as to what exactly the rules are for escorts etc. I'm not to sure what to use the car for really, sprinting is what I'm use to as we do it in the 911, but I think I'd like to perhaps try some circuit?

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

well rules are different all over the country, and ruled are read differentl by different people.down here you can only have an engine in what the car rolled out the showroom with, but heads are free.so for instance you can run a x-flow,pinto,BDA,cossie but the more modern stuff like zetecs and duratecs you cant.
Then im not too sure but i dont think you can run the cage through the bulkhead like it looks like youre going too. Also 5 linking is a grey area but i think that is allowed now.then you cant cut all the tunnels out although most people do.
But then rules for racing are different again but if you already sprint then you must have the blue book.have a good read of that as i may be incorrect on 1 or all what i have just wrote
Good luck and i will try and help if i can
P.S. The car does look really mean

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

For hillclimbing and sprinting your car would end up in sports libre, which is basically an anything goes except single seaters/kit cars class.
As for racing, most series would want an original engine and standard bulkhead and tunnels unless again you run in the anything goes class. You need to find a series you fancy doing and build it to the rules for that series

Note to Tom: the Isle of Wight is "down here" it's further south than dover

As to the racing, there's a few series such as you've mentioned with lots of different, modified cars in. One with a prety mean black sunbeam in, not sure what it's called, you guyz might know? But to be honest, it's the first car I've built and just wanted to go a bit mad with it. Hey, I'll just use it as a trackday car if not, and might try n get it in a magazine or something.Wot the hell

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

Yep thats Joss Ronchetti's Sunbeam .. 2.5 907Lotus in it and bloody quick, does 1.17's around Snett..

He did wall it, but I belive it was repaired in a week, think it was during a Time Attack round .. maybe wrong though.

Basicly with a non standard engine , you'll be in Class A of most race series.. stupid rule .. a Zetec is the same as a BDA's ..just half the price, Same as a N/A YB , just cheaper again ..

If you do mod the floor pan between the cars axle centerlines, you'll be in Class A/B even with a standard engine .. or there is the Old Fords Sprint Championship ... Anything goes as its a Handicap Championship ..

Cheers for the info on the championship possibilites!

Really, I've only got about £2500 to spend on the engine, max. Is it possible to get something half decent for that?

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

Not for the mods done to the shell.. cheapest and most power would be a YB turbo .. anything else to cope with class a cars is going to be 10k Duratecs or 20k BDA's

That said.. if you entered the OFSC you could put an 1100cc x-flow in there and still win ...

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

To be honest, I'm not that bothered about winning classes etc, or even seriously attacking a championship. I'm still prety into the porsche thing which is real good racing, so I think to be honest after what you guys have said it's gona have to be a trackday/ocassional hillclimb car. I just wanted to go fairly mad with the looks and have fun building the car whilst encorporating some interesting bits and bobs. Gues I can get a relatively fast engine tho for the money I've got in this case?

    Re: mk2 Sprint Car Build

yeah if your just after laughs .. any engine will do. along with any mods.. just run in sports libre if you do a sprint .. or like i said the OFSC will easilly take you on, and you still have a chance at silverware .. as for racing as long as you dont mind being in a class that has faster cars and just want track experience then just join the DMN ... seems anything is more than welcome there, and the classing is fair. Sign on is dirt cheap as well as the rounds ..

    cracking project

just a thought but whats the rest of your running gear like? worth considering your budget there too, especially if your running wide slicks and hammering it on a track, wont be too gearbox and axle friendly and it'd just be annoying if you keep breaking things every time you use it in anger

Well, I've finally made some progress. Bought an xe lump, with sbd ignition and twin webbers, alloy bellhousing etc all for a really good price Started fitting it today, got the engine mocked-up into roughly the correct place, and gona chassis mount it (cant say I'm at all happy with the kit from peter lloyd though! Got some gussets made up on the cage, and also fabricated a hydraulic handbrake which I'm really pleased with. Also got a floor mounted pedal box, as you cant reach the originals now, due to the driving position being so much further back. Well....here's the pics, hope you like

plr i think, but those are really nasty horrible spacers that use screw on wheel stud extensions they are so bad even the makers say dont use them on alloy wheels.

your going to find it hard work getting spacers thicker than 25mm because that length will need stupidly long wheel studs and MSA blue book prohibits spacers over 25mm thick
