    Ignition barrel removal

    Mk1 escort ignition barrel removal
Have a NOS barrel I was hoping to fit but can’t remove the old one. Lead to believe you turn the key to the first position then pull barrel out… is this correct ?
Is it a case of brute force or is there a knack to getting these out?

i cant speak specifically for MK1 escort, but on various Vauxhalls, fords, bmws and vw/audi etc , you have to turn to position one and also insert a long thin pin, such as a 0.5mm allen key, or insert a small screw driver into a hole somewhere to actually release the barrel

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

Thanks Graham… I did briefly feel around the casing for a hole etc incase I had to release a pin or the like but didnt find anything. I’ll pop round to my lock up in the next few days and have a better look at it incase I’ve missed something
Getting the key to turn in the barrel is a bit hit or miss. Sometimes turns 1st time and others I have to giggle it about to get it to turn to the next position so be good to get it out and try the new one.

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

After a little digging online it says there are two types… an early? style with a hole in casing to poke something in to release some kinda spring and a later type similar to the mk2 where you have to drill a hole in the casing
    Can anyone confirm ?

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

Hi Stevie, not got a pic atm. Finding hard enough to post let alone upload a pic lol
Didn’t realise there was a difference as in 1 that locks and 1 that doesn’t. Thought they were all the same.
If I remember rightly mine does have a steering lock.
Is it as straight forward as early cars don’t have a steering lock and later mk1’s do, similar to the mk2?
Any pics or info I’ve found online would suggest the later mk1’s and mk2 don’t have a hole in the case and need drilled !?

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

Removed today. No holes on side to poke anything through like the other type I’ve seen. Is this a drill out job ?

Frank see the little “rolled pins” in the case, I think it’s one of those that hold it in. I’ll check my manual see if I can get you a firm answer in the next day or so.

    attachment doesnt work.

This has better images, but I don't see anything obvious as a release mech, but there must be one.

The raised round bit near the bottom ? Anything there ?

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

On your one you need to drill a little hole from what I’ve found. Your pic edited and attached. It looks like it already has a mark for the hole.
5mm up from the rim around the body and 5mm in from the vertical cast mark on the alloy. Carefully centre punch to help the drill start and then drill a 4mm hole, that’s a fairly soft alloy remember. Go carefully and stop when you feel drill go though the body so you don’t damage the lock barrel inside.
Turn the key to position I, insert a terminal screw driver in the hole and push the spring down, pull on the key and ease the barrel out.
Go slow as there maybe a small spring and dowel pin at the bottom of the barrel that locks in to the contact section
I’ve circled what I think is the mark that’s already on your barrel

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

Thanks Zakspak. There’s a tiny wee hole visible in the 2nd picture nearest the key that’s big enough for a drawing pin to fit in it and it does feel like it’s pushing against a spring of sorts. I’ll need to fit it back on car to try poking a pin in it as I ain’t got enough hands to hold casing, poke in a pin and try pull key at same time

stevieturbo, just for info. That one you’ve linked is an early Mk1 example. It needs to be drilled in the casing similar to the procedure I’ve described but a different location for drilling the hole. It’s not the same as Franks barrel but worth having both types mentioned in the same place

    Re: Ignition barrel removal

That’s the hole I was referring to Zakspak

The attachment worked earlier Stevie. Don’t know why it didn’t put up a pic like the others.
I googled mk1 escort ignition barrel and saw one listed on Historic motorsport and saved the picture as looks different from my one

Also found Mk1 escort barrel removal on onemoreford site which mentioned drilling a hole and gives you a good step through guide…

Is that a hole that I’ve circled red ? If so I think you’re sorted. Maybe need something a bit more substantial than a drawing pin like a very small Allen key. Keep us posted

I’ll see if I can find another picture of the one listed on historic motorsport as it’s different from mine and the one in link Stevie posted

Aye, same one. I’ve found a substantial needle type tool in the house that might do the job. I mentioned drawing pin to give you an idea of how small the hole actually is as it can appear bigger when you zoom into picture.

If picture doesn’t appear or attachment doesn’t work then just ignore. I’m trying to upload a similar item that didn’t work before

Also listed as a mk1 escort part but as you can see there is a bigger hole on the side
