Hi all im thinking of having the exhaust on my mk1 escort cosworth with no silencer? is this a good idea or bad idea? thanks
Hi all im thinking of having the exhaust on my mk1 escort cosworth with no silencer? is this a good idea or bad idea? thanks
back pressure required,so bad idea probably.
I have a weedy 1500 cortina that has one of its two silencers missing (due to it breaking at the joining pipe) and it is uncomfortably noisy even at tickover. It's just too "boomy".
Perhaps a turbo'd engine will be better as the turbo tends to "eat" some of the noise but it's still going to be a noticeable noise without any silencing.
Here my side pipe , it was loud 104db but it looked sweet
Here it is in action lol, sounds like a lion roaring

The turbo does baffle the sound, when my actuator rod snapped on my cossie leaving the wastegate open it sounded like a bloody tractor
i made an exhaust for my cheap turbo sierra that finishes about where the gearbox ends, wern't that bad, like its been said, only starts getting noisy when your flooring it but thats all part of the fun aint it
its not dead till it's buried!
T.I.T engineering. "Feel the power!"
Thanks for the replies guys! i dont mind how loud it is, louder the better!! but dont want to cause problems by removing it, i thought with a turbo its best to have no silencer to reduce back pressure is this correct?
although its been said that back pressure is a bit of a myth, i was always told that N/A cars required a certain amount (i.e when your exhaust falls off its loud but gutless) but turbo's work differently and dont require any back pressure
Im no expert though, im sure that someone who knows their stuff can set things straight
i have experimented a bit with back pressure on n/a cars, sometimes a bit is good, but thats probably a case of an engine that has a "bad" induction length or cam which is ott for the rest of the spec. but in general as long as it doesnt throw the mixture off the less back pressure the better, of course you can go too big, make the exhaust too big and the gasses slow way too much and you can loose a scavenge effect
i apologise for keep referring to the old cossie, but i had a 3" stainless system all the way through with just a rear silencer before the back bumper
seemed to run absolutely fine and pulled hard through all of the gears
if you have not much power you need the torque so I would use a intermediate box ,my three inch exhaust systems with a centre box all run up to 460 and 450 lbs of torgue on t4 turbo ,that's why people say big turbos are laggy lol.if you spec the car properly you wont be sorry or it will up like the rest on ebay hope that give you an idea what im talking about
I was thinking of a 2.75" system, mine is running circa 380bhp......
Whats your thoughts on a 2.75" system over a 3.0"....
The 2.75 will give more room and clearance under the car...
