Not really a comparison Dave tbh mate, yes price per lap might be lower, but sprinting overall is cheaper to achieve. You might not get as much circuit time, but factor in engine stresses and rebuilds, body damage, tyres, fuel etc, and you're looking at a bigger bill.
That said, sprinting is becoming more expensive too these days.
Well it is a direct comparison in my opinion. When a half day sprint at Brands is only £20 cheaper than two races and a qualifying, which equates to nearly an hour on the track compared with 5 or so fast laps in a sprint, it is comparable.
I know racing can be more expensive to be competitive in some situations and I'm not knocking sprinting because I do like sprinting and may well still do some next year, its just that sprints are getting quite expensive and some of the rules are a bit contradictive. A 2 litre 16v car can end up with the 8v pintos and even xflows but a linked escort is thrown in with radicals
Anyways I won't spoil this thread so keep the updates coming on this very interesting mk2

I agree with a lot of that mate yeah, however a lot of the sprints etc don't happen at big international circuits like Brands, who charge way over the odds for just a sprint, as I guess ultimately they will have a daily charge to whichever club organises an event, therefore costing each car a similar amount to compete in any event at said circuit.
Linked Escorts don't get thrown in Sports Libre mate, just cars which don't have original engine blocks and mounting positions. You wouldn't be able to run in Mod/Prod as you are mounting your engine back from the original position.
Anyway, like you say, we're spamming kosingcurry's thread. However, it is fairly relevant, as it is what he intends to do with the car after all. For the record, kosingcurry will be in Sports Libre too.
I thought linked escorts with no leaf springs were being moved up into sports libre by some organisers?
I would be able to run in mod prod with the pinto in the sierra, the engine is still mounted to the origional crossmember, using a std prop and gearbox mounts
My escort would have had to run in sports libre though due to the bulkhead mods and the fact that the engine could go up to a foot further back, even if it was say a pinto still.

No mate, Matt was never moved to Sports Libre due to his rear suspension, ever. Even if they tried to, there's no mention in the blue book that you can't remove the leafs. All rendered irrelevant anyway as he now runs the D-tec and has to run in libre as a result anyway.
On your sierra, it depends if the cross member is in the original position or not? If you've moved it back then it's not factory standard, and subsequently will be deemed a non-production mod. They'd pick up on it, for definite.
As far as i'm aware the rules on linking have got a bit grey since your bruv has had the new engine so wouldn't have affected him with his YB, maybe only certain championships, but gonna be a problem next year for sure.
My xmember isn't moved back as this would ruin the geometry, everything sits where it should and all the 'dummy' running gear is sat in place now ready to make a few ancillaries like the exhaust etc. I cant update my thread cos all my pics have gone along with my camera phone that is at the menders

Ahhhh, sorry mate, I thought you were mounting it further back to aid with CoG. Shame about the linking, in that case I'd best just get Gary to turret my car with leafs then so I can stay in mod/prod, no way am I going to try and compete with Matt and Graham!!
Sod off are you pandering to the old antiquated fuddy duddies with thier outdated and restrictive rules that mean you cant compete in an old car against modern computer designed suspensions. Sticking an old cart sprung car against a a BMW 320 with its multilinked suspension, or even a focus with its control blade suspension is just pathetic, yes they will whinge that you pick your car you takes your choice .... but, lets be fair ..
The thing with this 'must retain leaf springs' is the FACT that you could go to an RS dealer and order a 6 linked shell ... the other point is the Leaf springs must be retained ..so put them in the boot, they are retained within the confines of the car, or retain them at home, the old duffers dont state where you have to retain them.
Or do what some have done, same as Zakspeed did in the Gp2 days ... and fit plastic leaf springs, they still have a sprung weight to them, 10-20 lbs possible, so its a spring. Rates are free remember, and it also states that supplementry links can be used as long as the original mounts and springs are used. ... so Glen, i'm still cutting your car up
Oh and theres always the Old Ford Sprint Championship ... where you free to let your mind imagine, your thoughts can become reality and you can compete on a level field.
Gary - I think they are great points about retaining (plastic) leaf springs.......just let me be there when you present it to a scrutineer - their faces will be superb to see
Ok ok, I was only joking really!
Most of them probably wont challenge it anyway! And if I do get bumped over to a different class then I'll just have to put a mega power d-tec in it instead then!

Whatever.........I'm really not bothered.
I've far more to wory about

With an XE, it'll be Sports Libre every time.
So......bit of progress on the car.
Thought I was gonna put fibreglass doors on the car, but after researching it, you can't really get em......so. Cut my doors out properly, but they were rediculously floppy and sagged big time. So made some corner braces up (bit snotted on but they'll clean up ok), and they're now excellent (and prety light). Think I'm gonna put new skins on as there is some rust at the bottoms, but hopefully thats no biggie.
Got the airfilter mounted properly now aswell, it was fouling on the bulkhead so i got a new offset back plate punched out and it fits a bute.
Also, took delivery of my new front and rear arb blades, and mounting blocks. Just need to decide, and order the main torque tube material for front and back then they can be made and the whole lot will be powder coated/mounted. Should look lovely, and work really well. Ordering this weekend new short front inserts, 6" 400lb springs, 40lb 2" helper springs, new adjustable rear shock absorbers, (havn't decided if they'll be avo's or spax yet??), and finally a new atlas diff cover ready to paint/build up the axle with the lsd in.
Getting there.....................slooooowly
The way to my heart: German and RWD!!
Great progress Will, you are going to beat me to the finish by a mile.
There are likely to be changes to the MSA rules shortly anyway which will work in favour of our "oddball" cars. There is talking of running a "special saloons class" which will allow mods to suspenion & fitting of any production car engine providing it remains in its original capacity or thereabouts
That sounds good, it's just stupid to put cars like this into sports libre.
keep up the good work fair play to you you are very skilled for your age you ll get beter as you get older well done mate keep pics coming
Ok.....well it's been a while so thought I'd give an update...
Right! Fair bit of progress....really trying to crack on with the car...don't want it to become another case of "FOR SALE, UNFINISHED PROJECT"!!
So, got my new rear adjustable SPAX shock absorbers (spoke to lots of people about what to get and these seem to be the best). Also, Wasn't happy with the exhaust at all, so ripped it off, and I've decided to run it under the car like any (not through it ). And after deliberating the weather or not to go over the axle, I measured up etc, and went for an under axle jobby. The axle is high enough and theres plenty of ground clearance. So exhaust is now completely finished and I'm chuffed with it.
I also decided to have it mounted in the centre, to run in conjunction with the diffuser which I've been coming up with.
Next: My anti-roll bars are finally finished (minus powder coat), and they fit a dream!
Also, got new front short inserts ready to go in, aswell as the springs, and helpers! oh, and I couldn't resist on the quafe gear knob!

Ok, so next was the diffuser/ventury. I thought a lot about this, and spoke to a few companies for guidance, and I think I've come up with a happy compramise. It should help. Was going to go for a carbon one, but due to time, made it from aluminium in the end. Its 2m long so doesn't quite flat bottom the car, but is prety damn good. and once the front splitters on (which should be about 1.5m long), I hope it will help the thing handle on a circuit! I based it on the one which was on a 600hp audi s2 which used to hillclimb at harewood. It's not finished yet....but is getting there, and will be powder coated black.
Next: I now have my calipers, (well chuffed with them toooo), they'll be on soon)!
Also, wasn't happy with the rear arches, prepfab in my opinion are crap, so I got rid of them, and got some gartrac ones. These actually fit and are almost fitted! Plus front spoiler is now fitting nicely, I've added the corner fill-in pieces.
Right, think thats it for now........Getting there slowly.
Next, it's off for the roll cage to be fully tig welded.

looks tidy, like the venturi
i think it needs bigger wheels though

It would seem my computer skills are not good enough !!
thanks Guys !
the pic of the atlas casing with the diffuser on, is this with unloaded weight or with the car on its wheels, as you might have problems when you jack it up hitting against the ally. zakspeed used to make a cone shape welded over the top to compensate for this.
ally also no so good with heat so heat shield or under the exhaust could be an idea. might be alright on this one tho.
Keep on with it anyway looking good.
amazing build mate loving how it looks, and those wheels are the bollocks. where did u get them? are they still made?
if it aint broke, break it!
Thanks for the comments. Ant, I'm not sure about the wheels at the mo....to be honest, it's hardly at the top of my priorities given the amount of other stuff there is left to do.
The diffuser pic, shows the atlas casing just about touching the aluminium....but thats with the car fully jacked up in the air (i.e worst case scenario), and when on its wheels, theres plenty of clearance. But I am however going to be putting a small relief in the aluminium just incase.
The wheels were from ebay....don't see many around now. Not sure if they're still made either??? You'd have to ring up compomotive.

I'm glad you sorted the arches

heers retro...yep that little guide you showed really made sence this time round. You can see how it's pulled in either side, as a result slightly convexing the side wall as it should be!
Couldn't have left it as it was really

Coming along great now, can't be far off of paint
I know someone who has some nice wide (240) wets to suit those wheels if you fancy them?
Like the exhaust, nice and simple

Bloody hell that's nice! Can a diffuser work on a lowered road car? I've been thinking of putting a smaller one on the RS2.
Thanks for the offer Dave! But I actually stumbled upon a bit of a bargain not long ago. Got 4 formula 3 qualifying type wets.....and they're awesome (can't wait to try them). May be interested though.........depending on price??
I'll put some pics of the tyres up somewhen.
Tanks for the feedback!

few more pics now all 4 arches are on!
The way to my heart: German and RWD!!
Can not wait to see this one in paint
diffuser prety much taken it's final form now, and I'm really happy with it actually. It's not too O.T.T, which is good. It'll be powder coated black just before final assembly once the cars all painted..........and engine bay bits are coming along nicely!
Next, cars booked in on the 15th for the roll cage to be propely TIG welded, and have all the clufix fasteners put in the shell!!! Progress!
